Animals in the Yard

Page history last edited by Waterloo Public Library 13 years, 5 months ago

What to do when animals invade your garden, by accident

Story by Melody Parker, Courier

Baby animals falling from tree, found in yard, etc., (Owls, squirrels, rabbits, possums, birds):

  • If it's a baby, you can gently return it to the nest wearing gloves.
  • It's a myth that the parent will reject it because of human scent.
  • Don't try to feed it anything, including animal bread and milk. This will kill them. Sometimes, a slow painful death.
  • If returning a baby owl to nest, be careful. The mother owl will defend her nest. Contact BHWR for assistance.
  • If no parent shows up, call BHWR to find out what to do next.
  • Call Black Hawk Wildlife Rehabilitation at 277-6511. The organization of licensed trained wildlife volunteers do not receive governmental sources for funding. Donations are accepted.
